Imitation is the Biggest form of Flattery!

What is one thing almost everyone has done at least once in their life? Yup, you guessed it, bought something online! If you have bought something online you more than likely received a receipt in your email for the purchase you just completed. You might not realize but UX and UI design go into the build and function of the receipt you just received in your spam folder inbox. In case you did not realize, this weeks design challenge was to design an email receipt for an online purchase. I took my inspiration from one of the largest online retail services in the world and one that almost everyone has heard of or used a service of. Care to guess? I’ll wait…

Yup, you guessed it. Amazon. Although my business model is a little different from them but is definitely something that would make sense for them as well.

So I started with laying out the header and showing how many things that they had in the cart when they checked out. I then worked on the wording for the body of the email itself. Understanding that the programmers would be able to add a link and item name the the person purchased into the email receipt as well as the fact that someone also donated.


The next portion of the email layout I designed would be the option to see the subtotal, tax and actual total as well as the option to view the order details which would take you to the order details page of your account. This portion also shows you a quick order number for reference.

After the section of the email that allows the recipient to see the subtotal, tax, total, link to review the order and the order number, I thought a quick look at the items that were ordered as well as a link back to the products and who the products are sold by was a good idea. This section combined with the above section allows the recipient all the information that they need about what they ordered is right at their fingertips. You can see this section below.

The final section of the email is the footer. This footer is super simple but has every link the possible recipient might need if they have a problem with the order that they recently made. It shows the logo just incase the user does not remember where the order they are referencing is from. You can see the footer below.

Put all the sections together and the email template looks something like what is below.
